Research cycle 1
Governance
Steering Committee
The role of the Steering Committee of the Observatory is to oversee the process of completing an authoritative report evaluating and synthesizing scientific contributions related to the challenges we face in the information ecosystem. This includes selecting initial priority themes for the first cycle of thematic evaluation reports, guiding the Research Assessment Panels and ensuring rigorous scientific standards.

Research Assessment Panels (RAP)
- Research Assessment Panels are tasked to produce a report synthesising the main findings from research on the information and communication space. The report is addressed to governments, policymakers, regulatory bodies and civil society organisations to provide a common and shared understanding of the structure of the information and communication space.
- Members of the Research Assessment Panels are in charge of sourcing and selecting academic resources through global calls for contributions and ensuring a scientific review of these contributions.
- The Research Assessment Panels are led by the Observatory’s Scientific Director and Lead rapporteur, and supported by rapporteurs.
- For the inaugural research cycle, three RAPs have worked respectively on:
- media, politics and trust;
- artificial intelligence, information ecosystems and democracy;
- and data governance and democracy.
